Why the ring can be more practical at night

A smart ring has no strap, weighs only a few grams, and never tightens around the wrist โ€” for many people that means forgetting they're wearing it, even overnight. People who sleep with a strap often take it off before bed, losing all overnight metrics with it. Data continuity is therefore often higher with a ring simply because it gets worn longer, overnight included, and it typically has longer battery life, which reduces the chance you need to charge it during the exact hours you're asleep.

Why the smartwatch stays better during workouts

A ring has no display, rarely has built-in GPS, and offers no direct controls mid-effort: for runners, cyclists and hikers, a GPS smartwatch stays the more practical choice, with pace and distance calculated in real time, heart-rate zones visible at a glance, route navigation, and physical controls that still work with sweaty hands or gloves. None of this is guaranteed on every smartwatch: GPS, a heart-rate sensor tuned for motion, and extra sensors depend on the specific model and price tier, not on the product category itself.

Three concrete setups

Apple Watch + a compatible Colmi ring

Data path: Apple Watch writes to Apple Health (HealthKit); FitMesh on iOS reads natively from Apple Health/HealthKit. In parallel, the Colmi ring connects directly to FitMesh over Bluetooth, without going through Apple Health. FitMesh has no direct API with Apple Watch: everything it sees from that device arrives via HealthKit, the same way any other app that writes there would. Available metrics and limits depend on the specific Apple Watch model and what that model actually writes into HealthKit. What FitMesh sees: two parallel streams on the same timeline (one from HealthKit, one from direct Bluetooth), reconciled with the logic described further below.

Galaxy Watch + a compatible Colmi ring

Data path: the Galaxy Watch writes to Samsung Health, which in turn writes to Health Connect; FitMesh on Android reads from Health Connect (never from Apple Health, which is iOS-only). The Colmi ring, on Android too, connects directly to FitMesh over Bluetooth, in parallel with the Health Connect path. FitMesh has no direct API with the Galaxy Watch: it always goes through Health Connect. Available metrics and limits depend on the specific Galaxy Watch model and what Samsung Health exposes to Health Connect for that model. What FitMesh sees: two parallel streams on the same timeline, just like the Apple Watch case.

Galaxy Watch + Galaxy Ring

This combination sits entirely inside the Samsung ecosystem: both the Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Ring write to Samsung Health, which writes to Health Connect; FitMesh reads both from there, like any other Health Connect provider. It's also the combination Samsung itself documents with the handoff behavior described above (watch as primary, ring taking over if the watch's battery runs out): that behavior happens inside the Samsung ecosystem, before the data ever reaches FitMesh. What FitMesh sees: a single timeline via Health Connect, already partly reconciled by Samsung upstream, plus the additional priority/deduplication layer FitMesh applies to whatever it receives (see below).

How FitMesh handles multiple sources

FitMesh brings together data from multiple devices and applies priority and deduplication rules. When different sources record the same time window, the app tries to avoid sums and overlaps; some conflicts may still require manually choosing the preferred source.

It's worth distinguishing what FitMesh does from what HealthKit and Health Connect already do upstream. Decision tree: which one to choose

  • Choose only the ring if: you mainly want continuous overnight monitoring, you don't do structured sport with GPS, and you don't need a display on your wrist.
  • Choose only the smartwatch if: you run, cycle, or do outdoor sport regularly, you want notifications and a display, and overnight comfort isn't your priority.
  • Use both if: you want the ring's overnight comfort and the watch's GPS/display/notifications during the day, and you're fine managing two devices (and, if you want to see them together, an app like FitMesh that brings them into one view).
  • Don't buy a second device if: your current smartwatch already gives you sleep data you find sufficient, or the budget doesn't justify a ring for a gain you'd consider marginal.

Limitations

Can a smart ring replace a smartwatch?+
