TL;DR

  • Galaxy Watch measures sleep from the wrist into Samsung Health: sending it to Health Connect requires enabling Sleep read and write permissions explicitly.
  • Samsung Health writes standard SleepSessionRecord items with detailed stages (Awake, Light, Deep, REM); companion features like snoring audio logs stay in Samsung Health.
  • Health Connect is a local on-device database, not a live streaming sync: sleep metrics appear only after your watch finishes syncing via Bluetooth to the phone.
  • When multiple devices record overlapping sleep intervals, FitMesh evaluates hypnogram detail (awake intervals and stage transitions) to keep the most informative session for that wake-day.
  • If sleep stages do not appear in third-party apps, confirm that Samsung Health has active permissions in Settings > Connected apps > Health Connect.

The sleep data journey: sensors, companion app, and Health Connect

Many users expect that wearing a Galaxy Watch overnight will instantly populate every fitness app on Android. In Android's health ecosystem, data flows through a modular, multi-step pipeline instead. The watch's BioActive optical sensor and accelerometer collect motion, heart rate, and variability signals. These raw points are interpreted by Samsung Health's algorithms either on the wearable or during sync with the paired smartphone companion app.

Transmission pipeline from sensor to client apps
  1. Galaxy Watch sensors (PPG + accelerometer)
  2. Samsung Health (algorithm analysis & stages)
  3. Health Connect (SleepSessionRecord)
  4. Client app / FitMesh (read & presentation)

Health Connect acts as a secure on-device store on your smartphone. Samsung introduced this bridge progressively starting with Samsung Health version 6.22.5 and broadened it in version 6.24 and above. Samsung Health writes sleep blocks using Android's standard SleepSessionRecord, appending SleepSessionRecord.Stage intervals (Awake, Light, Deep, and REM). However, Health Connect does not interface directly with the watch hardware: it only receives records that Samsung Health writes after user consent.

What Samsung Health exports and what remains proprietary

A critical point is distinguishing between features displayed inside Samsung Health and records actually written to the shared Health Connect database. The table below outlines the current status of each metric monitored during sleep.

Procedure: connecting Samsung Health to Health Connect

To allow Health Connect to receive sleep records recorded by your Galaxy Watch, configure the proper permissions inside Samsung Health. Follow these steps on your Android smartphone:

  1. Open the Samsung Health application on the Android phone paired with your Galaxy Watch.
  2. Tap the three dots icon in the upper right corner and select Settings.
  3. Scroll down to Connected apps (or Health Connect, depending on your app version).
  4. Select Health Connect from the partner app list and tap Allow or Open.
  5. In the permissions view for Samsung Health, locate the Sleep category and toggle on both Read and Write permissions (or Allow all).
  6. Open your destination app (such as FitMesh) and grant the Read Sleep permission when prompted by Health Connect.

How FitMesh processes sleep and resolves overlapping sessions

Inside FitMesh's architecture, health metrics are ingested through dedicated repositories running locally and securely on your device. The health_repository.dart module extracts SleepSessionRecord objects and stage intervals, normalizing them into uniform entities. Subsequently, the sleep fusion engine applies deterministic rules to attribute each session to its appropriate tracking day.

  • Wake-day attribution: sleep hours logged across midnight are credited to the calendar day on which you awaken (for example, Monday night through Tuesday morning belongs to Tuesday's daily card).
  • Overlap resolution: if you wear both a Galaxy Watch and another compatible wearable (such as a smart ring), or if a manual log overlaps with the watch session, FitMesh inspects hypnogram informativeness. The session with richer stage variety, confirmed awake intervals, and transitions is retained, while the less informative duplicate is marked superseded.
  • Tie-breaking preference: if both sessions offer comparable diagnostic stage richness, user-configured device priority is applied to determine the primary record.
  • Interruption and continuation handling: short awakenings of 90 minutes or less (or broader gaps before 11:00 AM) can be consolidated as continuations of the main night, while separate daytime rest blocks remain distinct naps.
  • No synthetic minute-level splicing: FitMesh does not blend conflicting stage segments from two different wearables into an artificial hybrid timeline, preserving the empirical integrity of the chosen source.

Troubleshooting synchronization and missing stages

If your morning sleep data is missing in connected applications or displays only total duration without stages, check these common causes and actionable solutions:

  • Missing sleep stages (only total duration): if Samsung Health logs an undifferentiated block without REM or deep sleep, the watch strap might have been too loose for continuous heart rate detection, or Power Saving mode may have disabled high-frequency optical sampling.
  • Data not visible in Health Connect in the morning: Galaxy Watch transfers records to your phone via Bluetooth when Samsung Health or Galaxy Wearable connects. Open Samsung Health on your smartphone and wait for the top sync indicator to finish before launching destination apps.
  • Permissions disabled after an app update: routine updates to Samsung Health or Google Play Services can occasionally reset companion authorizations. Check Samsung Health > Settings > Connected apps > Health Connect to confirm that toggles remain enabled.
  • Aggressive background battery restrictions: on certain Android devices, background tasks for Samsung Health or Health Connect may be suspended by OEM battery managers. Set Samsung Health's battery usage profile to Unrestricted.

Frequently asked questions

Does Galaxy Watch export individual sleep stages to Health Connect?+

Yes. In modern versions of Samsung Health (introduced in 6.22.5 and broadened in 6.24 and later), the app writes sleep sessions along with standard Android sleep stages: Awake, Light, Deep, and REM.

Why do only total sleep hours appear without detailed stages?+

This usually occurs if the watch could not record continuous heart rate (such as when worn too loosely), if Power Saving mode was enabled during the night, or if total sleep was shorter than the algorithm threshold required for stage profiling.

What happens if I wear both a Galaxy Watch and a smart ring on the same night?+

FitMesh identifies the temporal overlap and assesses hypnogram quality. It retains the session with greater stage variety and transitions for that wake-day, preventing duplicated hours without splicing conflicting data together.

Can I view sleep records older than 30 days via Health Connect?+

Upon initial authorization, Health Connect typically limits newly approved applications to reading data logged in the preceding 30 days. Accessing records beyond that window requires dedicated historical data permissions provided in modern Android releases.

Is synchronization between Galaxy Watch and Health Connect instantaneous?+

No. The watch transfers measurements to Samsung Health over Bluetooth periodically or when you open the phone app. Samsung Health then writes these records to the local Health Connect store, where other apps can retrieve them.
