TL;DR

  • Oura Ring works on any Android phone via Bluetooth. You do not need a specific phone brand.
  • Oura writes sleep, heart rate, steps, and SpO2 to Health Connect. Readiness and recovery scores stay inside the Oura app.
  • Health Connect sync is enabled by default from Oura app version 3.4 onward.
  • The Oura subscription (around 6 euros/month) unlocks full score explanations and trends. Basic data still flows to Health Connect without a subscription.
  • Third-party apps like FitMesh can read your Oura data from Health Connect without an Oura subscription.

Oura Ring is often associated with iPhone users, but it has supported Android since the beginning. The Android app is fully functional and syncs all core metrics. The limitation is that some Oura-specific features, like the Readiness Score algorithm and the AI-based insights, are processed inside the Oura app and are not exposed to Health Connect. Everything else, including the raw sleep and physiological data, is available on Android and flows through Health Connect.

First-time setup on Android

  1. Install the Oura app from Google Play and create an account (or sign in if you already have one).
  2. Put the ring in its charging case and open the case near your phone. The app will detect it via Bluetooth.
  3. Follow the pairing prompts. This takes about 3 minutes including initial firmware check.
  4. After pairing, go to Account and then Settings in the Oura app.
  5. Tap 'Connected apps' and enable Health Connect. Grant all permissions for sleep, activity, heart rate, and body measurements.
  6. The initial sync may take 10 to 20 minutes to backfill recent history.

What Oura writes to Health Connect

  • Sleep sessions: start time, end time, total duration, and sleep stages (REM, light, deep, awake).
  • Resting heart rate: nightly average and trend.
  • HRV (RMSSD): overnight average, the key recovery metric.
  • SpO2: overnight blood oxygen saturation readings.
  • Skin temperature deviation: deviation from your personal baseline, useful for illness and cycle tracking.
  • Steps and active calories: daily totals from motion tracking.
  • Respiratory rate: breaths per minute during sleep.

Does Oura work without a subscription on Android?

Oura requires a subscription (around 6 euros/month or 70 euros/year as of 2026) to access in-app score breakdowns, historical trends, and the guided programs. However, the raw health data, including everything that flows to Health Connect, is collected and synced regardless of subscription status. If you cancel your subscription, you can still use Health Connect-compatible apps like FitMesh to see your sleep stages, HRV, and other metrics.

Troubleshooting: Oura not syncing to Health Connect

  • Check Oura app version: Health Connect support was added in version 3.4. Update via Google Play if you are on an older version.
  • Battery optimization: Android may put Oura in a sleep mode that prevents background sync. Go to Settings, Battery, and exempt the Oura app from battery optimization.
  • Permission check: open the Health Connect app, tap 'App permissions', find Oura, and verify it has write permissions for every data type you expect.
  • Re-enable the integration: sometimes toggling the Health Connect setting off and back on in the Oura app forces a re-sync.

Frequently asked questions

Does Oura Ring work on any Android phone?+

Yes. Oura Ring connects via Bluetooth and the Oura app is available on any Android 10 or above device. You do not need a Samsung or Google phone.

Can I use Oura Ring without a subscription?+

You can pair the ring, sync data, and access your raw metrics through Health Connect-compatible apps. The Oura app's own features (scores, AI insights, historical charts inside the app) require a subscription.

Is Oura Ring better than Galaxy Ring on Android?+

Both are excellent. Oura has a more detailed app and richer third-party integrations. Galaxy Ring has no subscription fee and integrates tightly with Samsung Health. The ring hardware quality is similar. Your choice should depend on ecosystem: if you use Samsung devices and Samsung Health, Galaxy Ring is simpler. If you want the most detailed insights, Oura's app is better.

How long does the Oura Ring battery last?+

Oura Ring Gen 3 lasts 4-7 days depending on SpO2 monitoring frequency. With SpO2 enabled all night, expect around 5 days. Charging from empty to full takes about 20-80 minutes depending on the model.

Does Oura Ring track workouts on Android?+

Oura Ring detects activity automatically but is not designed for workout tracking. It does not have GPS and cannot record pace or route. For workout details, pair a GPS watch with Health Connect and use both: the ring for overnight recovery, the watch for active sessions.
